We recently had the opportunity of working with copper. Because of the price increase of copper over the last several years, it has become less common to use copper for projects such as countertops. The countertops we fabricated recently were made out of a sheet of cold roll copper in an .032 thickness. Because copper is a precious metal, you have to take more care in making the product so that it turns out as beautiful as possible. This particular customer asked us to build him two countertops. One countertop was made out of nothing but cold roll copper. The other countertop was made with two types of metal with seams between them. The first and last section is made of galvanized steel 18 gauge thickness and cold roll copper is used in the middle section. This countertop is intended to be used as a cash register counter at a country convenience store with the copper serving as a food safe area. The copper has a hem and an offset broken into it to create a seam between copper and galvanized steel. The countertops on this project both have angled corners cut in to create a more
stylish look with an “X” pattern broken into them.
When the project was finished, sheets of plastic were wrapped around them to protect them during transport and attachment to the cabinet underneath.
